Air Capital

Wichita is the Air Capital of the World. Nearly 47 percent of all general aviation aircraft produced worldwide are built here. The discovery of oil in the region set Wichita on its path to become the center of aviation manufacturing. Oilman Jake Moellendick invested his fortune in the Laird Swallow, the first commercially built aircraft in the U.S. Aviation pioneers Walter Beech, Clyde Cessna and Lloyd Stearman worked together then created their own companies. Aircraft production demands of World War II solidified Wichita's claim to "Air Capital." Cessna and Hawker Beechcraft remain based in Wichita today along with Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier Learjet and Spirit AeroSystems.
