Arkansas River & The Keeper of the Plains

The City of Wichita invested $20.6 million for Arkansas River corridor improvements designed to create a unique experience that is fund, educational and inspirational for the community and visitors to Wichita. The project includes the "Keeper of the Plains" Plaza along with improved bicycle/pedestrian paths on both sides of the river.

The "Keeper of the Plains" was created by and internationally recognized Kiowa-Comanche artist Blackbear Bosin, who donated it to the City of Wichita. A plaza surrounding the statue incorporates the history of the Native Americans and embodies a "sacred hoop" and the 4 elements that make up life (Earth, air, fire and water). Five manufactured boulders embedded in the river next to the plaza have a fire feature, and the grouping makes up the "Ring of Fire." Two pedestrian suspension bridges connect the plaza to bike/pedestrian paths along both sides of the Arkansas River.

Wichita has a bicycle route system that stretches over 100 miles. In addition, Wichita and Sedgwick County (adjacent to the city limits) have several options for bicycling. There are over 26 miles of bicycle paths following scenic areas such as the banks of the Arkansas River, giving the cyclist a safe, easy and enjoyable ride.

Outdoor enthusiasts will want to visit the Great Plains Nature Center in northeast Wichita to learn about the natural resources, wildlife and habitats of the Plains. The nature center includes a 2,400-square-foot exhibit hall, 2,200-gallon aquarium and two miles of hiking trails.
